Spider-Man Breaks The Record

Spider-Man: Brand New Day opened in China on Wednesday and blew past expectations. The film earned $16.5 million before the day even ended. And analysts expect it to hit an opening day total near $37.4 million. That number beats every American superhero movie’s opening day in China since 2019. Spider-Man: Far From Home held that record with $36 million, and now Tom Holland’s new film has taken the crown.

The movie also destroyed the most recent record holder. Venom: The Last Dance earned $9.4 million on its opening day in 2024. And Brand New Day nearly doubled that number before lunchtime.

Marvel Finally Ends Its Losing Streak

Marvel needed this win badly. The studio has struggled through flop after flop in recent years. Including Captain America: Brave New World, Thunderbolts, The Marvels, and The Fantastic Four: First Steps. Chinese regulators also limited American superhero movies from 2019 to 2023. And No Way Home never even played in Chinese theaters.

Brand New Day changes that story completely. Ticketing company Maoyan predicts the film will earn around $255 million in China by the end of its run. That would make it the best American movie in the country since Avengers: Endgame pulled in a massive $632.1 million back in 2019.

Star Power Helps The Numbers

Brand New Day doesn’t rely on Spider-Man alone. Mark Ruffalo returns as Hulk, and Jon Bernthal joins the fun as Punisher. Both cameos add extra star power that pulls fans into theaters.

A Bright Future For Marvel?

Nobody knows yet if this success will spark a bigger Marvel comeback in China. But Spider-Man clearly still connects with audiences there in a way other heroes struggle to match. If Brand New Day keeps this pace, it could become the highest-grossing MCU movie in years. It could finally pull Marvel out of its slump for good.
